Key Sustainability Highlights
- Zero waste philosophy with recovering energy by using waste incinerated in National Foods’ cyclonic boilers to produce the steam required for processing. A total of 1 467 tonnes of waste was incinerated during F2024, assisting National Foods in reducing its reliance on coal.
- The plans to migrate to cleaner energy sources and develop a solar plant capable of producing a minimum of 60% of energy requirements at the Aspindale site in Harare have progressed significantly in F2024. A roof top 2.65 MW solar array at the Aspindale site is planned to be commissioned in December 2024. Once this solar array is installed, National Foods will roll out installing solar power at other sites, including the new Basch Street Flour Mill in Bulawayo.
- National Foods is migrating to replace diesel run forklifts with electric and LPG run forklifts. These are more efficient and also improve the air quality within the warehouses. Currently National Foods has three electric forklifts and one LPG run forklift.
